When I read this book, I knew it would be PERFECT to use this week! It is such a cute story and such an original idea to compare trees to pets! In the story, Abigail wishes for a pet for her birthday and tells her family she knows exactly what kind of pet she wants - a tree!  Everyone else tries to convince her that trees are not pets but Abigail knows what she wants and understands the true value of trees.

Activity: The read aloud above includes a draw along portion where Andy teaches you how to draw a tree. Realistic trees can be a bit tricky to draw but I think this tutorial is simple enough for younger artists yet produces a realistic looking tree!

Early next spring, we plan to plant a few fruit/nut trees - if you have a space where you can plant a tree, do it!

Here are a few more ways you can show your tree appreciation and reasons why we're grateful for our backyard trees!

Hug a tree!

Climb a tree!

They provide shade for picnicking or reading

They're perfect for making clay tree faces, fairy houses, or hangout areas for your toys

They drop branches perfect to use for kindling and roasting sticks

They support our ninja line/tightrope!

Why do you love trees??
